Tempsford Women's Institute was originally established nearly 90 years ago and featured very strongly in the Trust Deed for Tempsford Stuart Memorial Village Hall. The Deed states that "The Club Premises shall be retained and used in perpetuity for all or any of the following purposes.....that is to say as a library, reading room, lecture hall, Women's Institute and Men's Club.....for the sound moral education and mental and physical improvement, development, recreation and general benefit of the inhabitants of the Parish and Village of Tempsford."
The modern day Tempsford WI was founded in 1984 by some of the ladies of the village. Presently, we have a lively group of close to 20 ladies of all ages, from founder members to some of the younger members of the village.
The WI still meets monthly in the old Women's Institute room in Tempsford Stuart Memorial Village Hall. The picture above (The Twin Bridges, Tempsford) is on the 2017/18 front page of our programme. We are organised by a management committee comprising:
Sue Wooldridge (President), Elaine Bettles (Vice President), Betty Russell (Secretary), Kay Quinn (Treasurer), Doreen Harrison (Programme Secretary), Maureen Gore (Refreshment Co-ordinator) and Gloria Jones (Membership Liaison)
Meetings are held on every second Monday of the month at 7.30pm in the Stuart Memorial Hall; they last about 2 hours.
We start by having a quick review of business and then our guest speaker for the night will take to the stage. We then break for refreshments, which gives us time to ask any questions of the speaker or to chat amongst ourselves; we are a very sociable group.
We have had some great speakers, ranging from hearing about living in Namibia, to looking at the stars, learning about wildlife, to hearing about the evil Sheriff of Bedford! Events have included crafts, making gifts, playing poker, bingo, quizzes and just having fun. We have a members night when they take over and surprise the Committee with what they have organised.
Tempsford WI also has a darts team which, happily, over the last two years has increased membership. All home games are played in the Wheatsheaf pub, who are very supportive. Over the past few years we have played in the county finals, winning and coming runners up on several occasions.
We also organise a Christmas meal for the whole group.

We are always looking for new members. If you are thinking of joining, why not attend one of our meetings to try us out? (Visitor's fee £3). Alternatively, contact our Membership Secretary, Gloria Jones at email@example.com
